Victorian Studies Centre
The Victorian Studies Centre is based on the collection of the Saffron Walden Literary and Scientific Institute, for which Essex County Council is the trustee.
The historic collection contains some 25,000 volumes of pre-1950 publications including long runs of 19th century journals.
Topography, the English Civil War, natural history, art, architecture, literature, biography, travel and exploration, archaeology and history are all well represented subjects. There is also a large collection of Victorian and Edwardian novels. The majority of the books in the historic collection are available for use in the library only. There is a card catalogue and an older dictionary catalogue.
New publications are regularly added to the collection and these are listed on ELAN and may be borrowed.
The centre also subscribes to many current serials, which focus on different aspects of the Victorian period.
The Centre is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9:00 am - 7:00 pm and Saturday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Researchers are asked to make an appointment.
