Using the Internet in the Library
Every person in Essex can now get on the Internet at their local library. All 74 libraries in Essex already provide Internet and email facilities, and thanks to a massive £1.7 million investment programme, known as the People's Network, those facilities are being upgraded and expanded. People of all ages can have an hour's free access to the Internet per day to fulfil all their information and entertainment needs.
Each library can provide screen magnification facilities and larger libraries also have screen reading software. For people who are new to the Internet, library staff can provide an hour's tuition at a small charge.
One of the advantages of using the Internet in the library is that Essex Libraries also subscribes to various information and learning services online. See the Lifelong Learning section. for further details. The Essex Internet Gateway provides an online listing of recommended quality internet sites.
Most libraries operate a booking system - either all the time or at the busiest times. If you already have a library card and know your ELAN password, then you can make a booking now for some libraries. By the end of the year, booking internet access in this way will be available for all libraries.
Other services are available on public computers. See the Using Computers in the Library for more information.
You don't need to be a full member of the library to use the computers. Have a look at Joining the library section for information on the various types of membership available.
